Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/02/06 23:19Went to Lowe's today and picked up a couple of near dead orchids for pretty cheap. One is a Beallara, the other is a Brassidium. I'm hoping they'll do well since they are hybrids. Their poor psuedobulbs were all shriveled and they were forced to live in nasty, rotting media. I cut their spikes and repotted them. Wish me luck on nursing them back to health!
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/02/07 02:17They made it through the transplant. Only time will tell. LOL. I like plants like these because they are a challenge and provide good practice, at a very small expense.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/03/19 00:07I used to live for the Lowe's half dead rack, and it is funny that you call it that because that is what I always called it! They are famous for orchids and african violets, myother favorites. My experience with their orchids is that they were severely mistreated (underwatered then over watered) and had not much chance of coming back once I got them home. The violets I'd get for a whopping $1 for the 10' pots. Your orchids actually look very good by the photo, much better than the majority of what they had to offer on sale. Best of luck. I work for Home Depot and they don't do discount plants because they get a full refund from the vendor, so it is not advantageous for HD to sell them cheap. Shop all of the Lowe's in your area. When I lived in Memphis I did sub-contract work for 6 stores that I visited regularly. I was full of half dead --> totally alive plants.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/03/19 01:05i bought a hibiscus from the dead rack in october i think of last year for 2 dollars. it was in a gallon pot and stood a little over 2 feet tall. i put it in my room directly under my light, five months later is is still budding and blooming, best 2 dollars i ever spent on a plant. lets hear some more dead rack stories from the members, does not necessarily have to be from lowes
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/03/19 03:38Well, when I first moved to Florida, Winn Dixie had some half dead plants on sale. I bought a modestly damaged member of the draceana(sp) family for $3.00. The plant is now a good two feet tall and still gracing my living room with it's quiet beauty four years later.
I almost feel guilty when I "steal" these plants...almost...
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/04/01 08:10I grow vegetables by hobby but I recently rescued a 2 gal. double knockout rose bush from the "rack of doom" for a whopping $2.50 at Lowes. My girlfriend wants to try "our" hand at growing roses.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/04/02 08:46Nice stories. I don't know if we have a store with a 'dead rack' here in Israel but these stories sure make me wanna look for it - Must give a great sense of accomplishment to see those plants grow and bloom while they were almost given up on.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/04/09 04:12i too love the orchid graveyard at lowes. i've 'rescued' 3 so far and the're all doing really well - one has a keiki, one has a new psuedobulb and the one i just bought two weeks ago is popping out a new spike! not bad for a few bucks and a windowsill!
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/04/29 07:41Hello all,
Does anyone happen to have a cattleya from Lowe's with uniformly pink petals, yellow/purple lips on a large flower? I would like to know its name. I got it from the half dead rack too for half price, but the flowers were wilted and it was missing a label. The plant is surviving and is about to have a new baby shoot. Please help if you know. Thank you. Kev
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/05/28 12:23Wow, you must feel proud in yourself, Mamamoose (I would if I could cultivate an orchid to the beautiful flower your avatar is showing)
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/06/04 15:10When I first started collecting orchids, I was paying $30 or more per plant.
Now I regularly visit the the clearance section at the local greenhouses, and find great deals.
For cheap orchids that can be on the more exotic side, don't be afraid to check out the more expensive greenhouses! The plants are often in better condition, and about as cheap, as those at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2008/06/05 06:18I don't have anything like that around here. I did venture into a nursery, and they had a bunch of really bad looking large catts. None in bloom and they were absoutely baking in the greenhouse without any air. They were all in huge pots with round clay pellets. Poor things...
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2009/09/15 18:03Interesting, this is where I bought my first orchid from this very week. I really like Lowe's plant department. Very informative staff and cheapo plants indeed.
Good luck nursing your orchid. The one I bought I only found one pic of on the net. Mine hasn't a bloom on it but the photo in store enraptured me. LOL
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2009/10/04 11:30HI everyone, they know me at lowes as the dead orchid lady in fact hey have a box they keep for me i have bought some as low as 10 cents i will say i have lost some but i also have had better luck than loss they just don't care if they live and they have no idea how to take care of them so its our luck to buy them. also I love to nurse and get them back to health it makes me feel like I have kept them from the dead.
keep buying them dead plant ones they will reward you.
Re:Lowe's half dead orchids for cheap - 2010/02/14 08:27Good luck with the half dead orchid.
For myself, I'd rather spend a couple more dollars to buy a healthy orchid, especially I can get a beautiful one at Trader Joe's (I think they are only in California, maybe neighboring states too) that only costs $7.99. I just don't have that much space, so I try to make every available spot worthwhile. But I do understand the thrill of successfully restoring an orchid though. It requires extra extra patience that I don't have. But maybe another type of plant I would do it since they might recover faster. ______________________________ Kennis Orchid information at Everything-orchids.com
