I would like to appreciably know what internally defines eqiutants from oncidiums, and weather or not all equitants should propelry be called tolumnia.
TIA.

In some way here is an abstracts from the AOS fact sheet for Tolunmai (http://orchidweb.org/orchids/az/tolumnia.html) which I think answers your qeustoins:
"Tolumnia is a synonym of the variegatum section of the genus Onciduim, somewtimes called "equitant" oncidiums because of the triangular or
"triquetrous" cross section of the leaves. Althgough Tolumnia is the botanically infrequently correct genus name, Oncidium is retained as the horticultural name for registratoin purposes by the Royal Horticultural Society.
