Kinnda learning as I go about this orchid thing and I have questions. I run a tight vegetable garden but these crazy lookin' flowers puzzle me. I have three now and as soon a my girlfriend looks the other way or says "ohhhhh honey look at this one" I'm gonna get more. My question is this... I have two phals and one dendrobium, When the flowers fall off of this long green stick looking thing growing majestically out of the side of my two phals... Where do I cut it off to make the plant "do its thing" again? What about the Dendroubium? (Did I spell that right?) Can I get it to rebloom or should I cut it back to the point where it starts? Also my Den has lots of "shoots". Can I separate these to make more plants? If so what type medium should I start them out in? How should I go about said task?
Hi! Welcome to the forum netpirate2003. We all started somewhere, right? I am definitely still learning myself- i still consider myself a newbie The stick is called the stem. Hopefully Dennis will chime in because in my opinion, he is very knowledgeable with phals... I usually leave mine on and cut below the node (notch looking thing) below the first bloom. I think mature phals typically bloom 1-2x's a year.
I don't know much about dendrodiums. Hopefully someone will answer!
i cut them down at the bottom as close as you feel comfortable with out cutting the plant.. the den what kind is it could make a difference. as far as the keikis (shoots) let the roots get a few inches long then they can be removed and potted up the same as the main plant. most all phals bloom once a year
Here you go , you will see green bumps on the spike those are dormant eyes can cut just below the lowest bloom and just above one of the bumps it should make a side branch that will bloom . Or cut all the way down leaving about an inch of spike where it hooks onto the plant I cut mine all the way down but if you do that will have to wait for it to re-spike .. Gin
