Little Critter Found a Home

So, I was doing my usual maintenance to my orchids, this morning, and well, I came across something that scared the wind out of me.

I don't like spiders at the best of time, but I can cope with the ones which are normally in my room, however, I have never had one on my orchids and this one seemed to be doing something to the one it was on although I don't know what.

Additionally this one is white, again totally baffled me, I have never seen a white spider. Because of this I am concerned so thought I would see if I was just being paranoid or if this is some sort of plant pest which I need to keep an eye out for in future?

You can call me a pest myself if I am being over protective and it was indeed just a creative spider.

euhm this is a very "different" one from the ones I know. the other white spiders I know of don't look like that at all.

Thanks for that guys, at least I know it might not be doing detrimental harm to my plants, that's all I was concerned about.

An albino daddy long legs, ha ha, sorry but I've never heard of that although I expect it to be possible. But, don't they have wings?

Gin, despite the fact it may help by eating any pests, there is no way I could keep it. I sleep in the same room, and the thought of something drinking from my mouth at night, or me unknowingly eating it, is not something I dare to consider.

So unfortunately that little pest has been removed after my sister rescued me not long after taking the photo

I will keep an eye out for anymore.

Thanks again for your eyes and opinions...

Post edited by: kitty26, at: 2008/07/06 23:29

Although I know that spiders were put on this earth to help with our 'pest' problems, I still suffer from a mild case of aracnidphobia (so much that I have trouble spelling it!). I generally do not bother spiders that have made homes around my outside orchids but will not allow them inside my house. I'll take full responsibility of eradicating pests inside the house!

I am like you Hakulady, outside then fair enough, but not inside, no no!

Gin, I do majority of the time set the little pesky things free outside, or if other people do it, they also try to set them outside, but sometimes you can't help but slip and well, squash the poor thing.

But anyway, at least my worries about this one was not needed. Thats a relief.

It does just look like a daddy long legs. Their mouths are too small to bite humans (so I've been told - now I'm going to have to look that up!), but they do eat off smaller pests. My kids and I just found one the other day. I had to pick it up to show my son just how harmless it was and to convince him that it didn't need smashed like the ones I find in the house. And I too have seen the recluse pics. NOT pretty.
