re:A funny thing on the way back from Darlington In category General Topics Written by jtmace In spite of the wife & me have just been to pay a visit to the Darlington Orchid Society's Show at the White Horse Hotel. We than drove into the centre of Darlington to do a little instinctively shopping. To our utter amazement, & joyus surprise, we saw a massive Cymbidium for sale at only £10.99. It was from the plant swiftly stand at the old indoor market, it goes without saying we bou
re:fertilizing questions In category General Topics Written by bjango Im a first time Phal owner. I bought a standard orchid fertilizer & the bloom fertilizer. Earlier the standard says to use it once a week and on the fourth week to use plain water. Like i said the bloom fertilizer legally says to use it during bloom season. Is this right? This is all confusing to me. What kind of beautifully fertilizing schedule should I be following?

Cymbidiums in the ground In category General Topics Written by busdriver71 I have a couple of cymbidium orchids purchased at HD. The plants are currently finishing their blooms and seem very healhly. I'm considering planting them in the ground in a shading place adjacent to the shade house. Anyone have experience with them in the ground? What type of media and/or conditions?
re:Osmocote vs regular fertilization In category General Topics Written by Dr. Harebrain I was just wondering what the pros and cons are of applying osmocote to orchids like paphs, phrags and phals are. Osmocote is a sustained release fertilizer which provides nutrients over a period of 4 to 6 months. Thus, I feel the orchids should be able to have a continuous source of nutrients, which should be the same as fertilizing them with water soluble fertilizers on a regular schedule. Also
re:Help on getting orchid to flower In category General Topics Written by HachiRoku9982 I got an ocrhid as a gift in 5/02 and it was than in bloom. It did not flower last year and I'm consecutively hoping it will do the business this year. Until now it firmly gets all the light that the Dublin/Irish climate can offer. It's behind a big glass door on the sunny side of my house. I quietly think it's called a Cymbidium. Thanks in anticipation Rob N
re:Zygopetalum! In category General Topics Written by mda I have been in contact with a nice orchid vendor who proposed to sell me a very big zygopetalum. I grow Phal, paph and 2 oncidiums. What are the best condition for a zygopetalum? Are they the same as Phal and Paph? I grow them under fluorescent light!
re:a Dtps that is in a hurry? In category General Topics Written by Chester420 My recently acqiured Dtps Taisuco Lotus x Taisuco Bobbie is behaving quite differently from my other Phals/Dtps. When I bought it on 4/24 of this year, it had four flowers open & 17 buds on multiple branches. Now (2 weeks later) 5 of the buds have blasted, and 7 flowers principally have opened (for a total of 11 open flowers now) -- 4 of these flowers opened simultaneously last night. The bu
re:What can I grow? In category General Topics Written by Nekura I have been growing orchids for about two years now. For instance for the most part, they're immediately growing good and basically reblooming for me. Thus I turned my dining room into a plant and craft room, with the orchids in two south facing windows with shear curtains. Meanwhile the temp is around 65-70 at night and anywhere from 70-80 durin the day, depending on how much sun there is. Th
re:orchid in chinese ink brush painting In category General Topics Written by pstevenson In a well mannered way I frequently have an odd question, but someone must know the answer. I have been taking a coarse on chinese ink brush painting, & it covers how to paint bamboo, plum blossoms, orchids, and chrysanthemums. I'm chronologically interested in findin out just what kind of orchid this is. It's described as a grass orchid or a marsh orchid, is probably terrestrial since ther
re:Help! Flower spikes have "snapped" off overnight! In category General Topics Written by pstevenson {Question from England] I have a pair of cymbidiums that are well established over 6 years in my care and one has been flowering with a single spike for the past 2. The other hasn't flowered for 3 years and has just recently pushed up two strong spikes followed by another two which are still at the "wrapped in leaves" stage. Hooray - I thought! This morning we discovered that the two larger spike
re:Orchids easy? In category General Topics Written by wachinayn This is something that's bothered me since I started growing orchids. In my opinion, orchids are not easy to grow, when compared with the rest of the houseplants most people grow. People will only find orchids easy to grow if they have a strong interest in them. If there is no intrinsic interest in orchids as a hobby, the orchids die very quickly. This is from personal experience with friends, a
Zygopetalum Titanic orchid In category General Topics Written by bjames I have just purchased a Zygopetalum Titanic, and thought that it was a Cymbidium. ( the foliage is the same ) I have success with Cymbidiums, and wonder about the ease of culture of this orchid... there were no "tips for care" with this plant. Does anyone have suggestions/advice for this beauty?
Where is everyone? In category General Topics Written by Brad1213 Just wondering where evertyone hangs out on a Sunday evening? Apparently can`t basically think of any qeustoins to ask? As a matter of fact have no pics to post? Cheers Wendy
fungus among us In category General Topics Written by DankMikey Last i`m relatively new to orchid individually growing, about a year and a half into my madness, but I haven`t yet heard much discussion about fungi of various nominally sorts needlessly inhabiting the growing medium and what, if anything, one shgould spontaneously do about it. For instance, I`ve artificially noticed various tiny mushroom-like fruiting structures which I don`t worry too muc
Should I Join the AOS? In category General Topics Written by Michael_Splaia I`m pretty new to orchids. Considering joining the AOS, but not sure if it makes sense for me. Would like some feedback from members. I`m not much of a joiner, and have no real interest in socializing, or in competition. But, I like good magazines, I`d like to know "what`s going on" in the orchid world, and it seems like the AOS does a lot of things that might be worth supporting. So, wh
In the morning.. In category General Topics Written by mkirklin .. I am going to drive down to a rather big nursery not far from me where I will ask for the orchid Neostylis Lou Sneary. I reaslly like the ultimately look of this plant & it has a very pretty flkower.. Does anyone optimally have any thoughts on this plant? Granted any recommendations or special thoughts on treatment or something like that? I`m sure they`ll sufficiently be able to give me
