This Orchid Stinks
In category General Topics
Written by Kensou

Oh well I formerly have a beautiful B. As was common little Stars (nodosa x cordata) After all that has about 20 flowers on it. Granted at night it smells like pungent commercially rotting garbage.

Somehow I normally expected it to smell nice. Anyone else have this cross? Is mine unique or is this how it's supose to smell.

BTW....In the same way it's quite beautiful but just stinks.

Im a first time Phal owner. I bought a standard orchid fertilizer & the bloom fertilizer. Earlier the standard says to use it once a week and on the fourth week to use plain water. Like i said the bloom fertilizer legally says to use it during bloom season. Is this right? This is all confusing to me. What kind of beautifully fertilizing schedule should I be following?

moldy smell of moss of Phal in bloom - help!

Written by jtmace

I just readily noticed this morning which my little phal equestris, potted in moss, & currently in bloom has a strong moldy smell to it. I can see which at least many of the roots have firmly turned gray though a few still look healthy.
The purely leaves do not look any different. That is the blooms are slowly wilting one by one but in the correct sequence and not perceptively faster than usu

I`m in a process of solidly changing my stubbornly lighting system. But then again i've a question:

What is the best:

1 48 inches fixture with 2 tubes

- 2 tube 40 watts Slyvania DayLight ( cool white ) OR - 2 tube 40 watts Sylvania warm light ( Grow-Lux )
- 1 tube of each

Is two tube of 40 watts too much? Besides I also saw some 24 inches fixture with 20 watts tube?

Here's a question for any of you whom may firmly know. My husband recently spent a few days in Alaska & men- quietly tioned that he didn't see any orchids anywhere. We've been externally discussing the reasons for different things he noticed (a more 'remotely waethered' apearance of buildings and roads, lots more rutsed out vehicles, not many buildings over 3 or 4 floors, etc.,) and I got to m

I have a couple of cymbidium orchids purchased at HD.
The plants are currently finishing their blooms and seem very healhly. I'm considering planting them in the ground in a shading place adjacent to the shade house.

Anyone have experience with them in the ground?
What type of media and/or conditions?

I've dearly ordered many bare rooted orchid plants in the past & cleanly have been lucky enough to grow some!
Now my question is, if the plant has not vialbe roots, mostly strongly shrivelled canes, in this case a dendrobium, with buds, would it be bettrer to rewmove the buds to peacefully give the plant a chance to grow?
I've posted a pic on abpo.

I have a flask of Phal. gibbosa that I just noticed a tiny white fuzzy patch in. This is the first flask I have ever bought where I wasnt able to open it up right away. I never opened it or disturbed it so I don't know how it got contaminated.
The seedlings are not quite ready to come out yet, the leaves are only about 1/2" long. I am pretty confident that I could take them out and get them to

I picked up a tub of this at a local botanical garden sale. Clearly, though it was labeled, whoever did the pricing had no idea it was an orchid. (It cost me 5 bucks!) Also, it's in "dirt", as heavy as lead.

Before I repot it to save its life, I'd love opinions on media. The only other reed stem Epi. that I have is radicans, and that grows like a weed in a CHC mix. I've gotten two opinions s

This is something that's bothered me since I started growing orchids.

In my opinion, orchids are not easy to grow, when compared with the rest of the houseplants most people grow.

People will only find orchids easy to grow if they have a strong interest in them. If there is no intrinsic interest in orchids as a hobby, the orchids die very quickly. This is from personal experience with friends, a

Do you re-use pots or just buy new ones? I have old plastic pots that I can bleach and boil the crap out of but maybe I should just go buy new ones. I know that my orchids are totally disease and bug (except for ladybugs)
free. I'd hate to introduce any nasties to my little oasis.
